On Wednesday there will be a draw for the 2nd qualifying round for the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League, where the Danish champions from Aarhus GF are among the 28 clubs. Due to a lack of qualification in three out of the last five seasons and not least a very disappointing defeat against Larne F.C. (Northern Ireland) in the 2nd qualifying round for the UEFA Conference League in the summer of 2021, AGF is unseeded in this round, which means that the quality of the opponent will vary greatly. Potential opponents such as Red Star Belgrade (Serbia), Dinamo Zagreb (Croatia), Slovan Bratislava (Slovakia) and Lech Poznan (Poland) are ranked much higher than Aarhus GF in the European club rankings, while the national champions from e.g. Gibraltar, Kosovo or Bosnia-Herzegovina seem far less intimidating. The draw could therefore have significant sporting and financial consequences for the Danish champions.<\/p>\n
Only 6 clubs can reach the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League through qualifying matches<\/strong><\/p>\n For the top clubs in Europe, participation in the UEFA Champions League is crucial, both sportingly and financially. It is estimated that participation in the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League will secure these clubs between 100-150 million euros or around 1 billion DKK through prize money and television rights. The top clubs’ dependence on this astronomical amount has meant that 21 clubs from the five biggest European leagues \u2013 Premier League (England), La Liga (Spain), Serie A (Italy), Bundesliga (Germany) and Ligue 1 (France) \u2013 have qualified directly for the league game and thereby secured at least 8 matches with enormous revenue. In the coming season, only 6 clubs out of 36 will gain access to the CL league game by 4 qualifying rounds. Over time, the UEFA Champions League has developed into the \u201cgolden egg\u201d of the top European clubs. It is primarily through qualification for the UEFA Champions League group and league games four times in the past ten seasons, supplemented by qualification for three group games in the UEFA European League and two league and group games in the UEFA Conference League in the same period, that FC Copenhagen has generated more than DKK 1 billion in revenue, thereby giving it a significant financial lead over all other football clubs in Denmark.<\/p>\n Significant difference in income in the three European tournaments<\/strong><\/p>\n There is a significant difference in prize money and television rights in the three European club tournaments. All clubs that qualify for league play receive starting money, money for matches won and drawn as well as television money. Starting money in the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League will be 19 million euros (140 million DKK), while corresponding amounts will be 4.3 million euros (32 million DKK) in the 2026-27 UEFA European League and 3.1 million euros (24 million DKK) in the 2026-27 UEFA Conference League. Likewise, the profit money per match won and drawn will also be very different in the three tournaments: Each win will trigger 2.1 million euros (16 million DKK) in the UEFA Champions League, 450,000 euros (3 million DKK) in the UEFA European League and 400,000 euros (3 million DKK) in the UEFA Conference League. After the 8 matches in the league, the clubs receive both a placement bonus and TV revenue, as well as additional amounts for qualification towards the quarter-, semi- and finals of the tournaments. It is estimated that FC Copenhagen achieved revenue through start money and performance bonus in the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League of 194 million, to which are added additional revenue from spectators, merchandise and sponsorships. Similarly, FC Midtjylland secured a total of 128 million DKK by starting money and performance bonus in the 2025-26 UEFA European League season, where the club finished 3rd in the league game and lost to Nottingham Forest in the round of 16. Clubs like FC Copenhagen and FC Midtjylland typically earn 5-15 million DKK per home match in the form of tickets, VIP hospitality, merchandise, etc. Finally, there are often large long-term gains during player sales, as European club tournaments are a good show window, especially for the clubs’ youngest and most talented players.<\/p>\n Unique chance for sporting and financial success for Aarhus GF<\/strong><\/p>\n There is thus a lot at stake for Aarhus GF in the coming weeks and months, both sportingly and especially financially. The chance of qualifying for the league game in the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League and thereby total revenue of 200 million DKK or more as an unseeded team is, in my opinion, minimal. The draw on Wednesday could have a very significant impact on AGF’s chances of qualifying for European league play in the autumn of 2026. A combined victory over two matches (21\/22 July and 28\/29 July) will at least ensure AGF’s participation in the 2026-27 UEFA Conference League game and thus an expected total income of 40-75 million DKK. If it results in defeat in the 2nd qualifying round of the 2026-27 UEFA Champions League, there are fortunately still two chances for participation in either the 2026-27 UEFA European League or the 2026-27 UEFA Conference League.
